Definition:  Apparent magnitude

Apparent magnitude is a logarithmic measure of the brightness of a star as observed from Earth. The brighter the object, the lower it’s assigned magnitude — including negative numbers. Apparent magnitude depends on a star’s intrinsic brightness, its distance, and the amount of light that interstellar matter absorbs before the light reaches us.
